Father & Sons In Football
Cesare and Paolo Maldini
We start off with the Maldini family from Italy. Both father Cesare and son Paolo have lifted the European Cup as captain of Milan and fittingly the two feats took place in a gap of exactly forty years. Cesare also had a successful time as coach after retiring as a player while Paolo put an end to his 24 year old professional career at the end of last season after winning a host of major honours at club level and making more than hundred international appearances for Italy.
Arnor and Eidur Gudjohnsen
This is probably the most interesting father-son combination in this list simply because they were involved in the same international match as teammates. Son Eidur replaced father Arnor during Iceland’s 3-0 friendly win over Estonia in 1996. Eidur is the more famous of the two as he played in the Premier League for Bolton and Chelsea and then won the Champions League with Barcelona. Therefore many wouldn’t know that Arnor also used to be a striker and won over seventy caps for Iceland and is presently the agent of Eidur.
Miguel and Xabi Alonso
Miguel Alonso was a highly accomplished midfielder for Real Sociedad in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He won two league titles with them but joined Barcelona after representing Spain in the 1982 World Cup. He also had coaching spells at a few Basque clubs of Spain. Son Xabi also had a successful time at Sociedad before joining English giants Liverpool. After five memorable years at Anfield he is now one of the best midfielders in the world and part of the current ‘Neo Galactico’ era at Real Madrid.
Frank Lampard Sr. & Jr.
Frank Lampard senior spent eighteen years at West Ham United, where he made his name playing at left back. He took up coaching after retiring as a player and was the assistant coach of the Hammers when Frank junior began his professional career at Upton Park. Unlike his father, Frank junior is reputed for his intelligent play and goals from midfield and without any doubt has been the more successful of the two at both club and international level.
